As a young boy I would love to read and re-read my grandfather’s memoirs from his motorcycle trip across the ‘Post-Independence India’ of the ‘50s. And more than the narratives, the pictures caught my attention. The portraits, landscapes, sceneries all belonging to a long-gone era, preserved in Black & White. When I got a camera of my own, I knew from that very moment that this would be my life’s path.
Photography has taken me to varied locales. I’ve met people across the social fabric of India and realized that each person has a story so distinct from the other! I’ve captured some candid moments of the street dwellers and that also of the sadhus undertaking their pilgrimage to the mighty Himalayas. I’ve eaten with Tibetan refugees while they narrated their tales of exiles in a foreign land. I’ve chased clouds, birds and elusive wild animals. All of this ingrained in me a sense of patience and modesty which has shaped me as a person.
And in this constant process of ‘making a photograph’ I’ve learnt to use my camera to build, capture and preserve stories.
A number of my works have been featured in various publications such as the Times of India , the Hindustan Times, Nikon-Germany and Better Photography Magazine. I’ve also worked with organizations like INTACH in close association with the UNITED NATIONS.
Over the years I’ve specialized in wedding photography. I focus on offering a creative and natural style, combined with over 9 years of photographic experience. In the past, I have had the privilege of documenting weddings in Mumbai, Bhopal, and Delhi etc. having thoroughly enjoyed working with people and being able to create beautiful images to be treasured and shared for years to come. My philosophy for capturing wedding pictures can be excellently summarized by one of my most favorite quotes from Henry Cartier Bresson:
"Think about the photo before and after, never during. The secret is to take your time. You mustn’t go too fast. The subject must forget about you. Then, however, you must be very quick."
The values of patience, modesty, and the ability to anticipate the perfect shot are central to my work. My approach is best highlighted by my ability to work with ‘nervous subjects’ and to make them feel at ease in front of the camera. Whenever, I work on an event assignment, I try to become a part of the family, thereby coaxing my subjects to shun all inhibitions and these result in memorable photos.
